Five days answers one planning question first: how many bases can you handle?

For most first-time visitors the honest options are Seoul only, Seoul plus one city by train, or Seoul plus day trips. Three hotel bases plus a domestic flight usually costs more time than it buys.

This is not a second 7-day route with two days deleted. Use the option tables below, then open the day-by-day guide that matches the shape you chose.

Train times and ticket rules change. Book through the current KTX booking guide rather than guessing app names or fares from older posts.

If someone offers a 5-day plan that hits Seoul, Gyeongju, Busan, and Jeju, treat it as a marketing list, not a realistic first trip.

Option A: Seoul only (default for first-timers)

Who it fits: first visit, limited energy for luggage, interest in palaces, markets, food, and neighborhood walks.

Shape: five nights in one Seoul base (or four nights if day 5 is departure). Use the Seoul 3-day itinerary as the core, then add two days from free walks, markets, or a day trip you can skip if tired.

Where to stay: one neighborhood hub. Start with where to stay in Seoul.

What you gain: evening time that multi-city trips lose to packing and stations.

What you skip: a second city's character. That is fine on five days.

Sample outline (Seoul only)

  1. 1
    Days 1 to 3
    Seoul core

    Palaces, markets, one night district

  2. 2
    Day 4
    Seoul free or low-cost day

    Stream walk, Hangang, museum

  3. 3
    Day 5
    Buffer or day trip

Or airport buffer if flying home

For free and low-cost days, use free things to do in Seoul.

Option B: Seoul plus Busan (one train move)

Who it fits: first-timers who want a clear second city and accept one hotel change.

Shape: about 2.5 to 3 days Seoul, then KTX to Busan for 2 days, with buffer on arrival or departure. This is the 7-day Seoul-Gyeongju-Busan idea without Gyeongju.

Transport burden: one long rail half-day. Confirm schedules and stations in the KTX booking guide. Seoul Station and Suseo are different departures depending on the train product and date.

Where to stay: one Seoul area, then one Busan area (often Haeundae or Seomyeon). See Busan areas.

What you gain: coast, markets, and a different city pace.

What you cut: Gyeongju heritage depth, Jeju, and multi-stop rail hopping.

Sample outline (Seoul + Busan)

  1. 1
    Days 1 to 3
    Seoul

City core; pack light for the move

  2. 2
    Day 4 morning
    KTX south

Half day lost to rail and hotel check-in

  3. 3
    Days 4 to 5
    Busan

Use the Busan 2-day frame compressed if needed

Option C: Seoul base plus day trips

Who it fits: travelers who hate changing hotels, and who want nature or heritage without a second suitcase cycle.

Shape: keep Seoul lodging. Spend one or two days on trips such as Nami / Gapyeong, Chuncheon, or a long heritage day only if energy allows.

Transport burden: early starts and return evenings, but no hotel move.

Links: Nami Island day trip, Chuncheon day trip, and the destinations hub day-trip strip under Destinations.

Watch-out: a full Gyeongju day from Seoul is long. On five days it often steals recovery time from Seoul evenings.

What not to squeeze into five days

  • Jeju as a fourth base (flight, car or bus learning curve, another hotel).
  • Seoul + Gyeongju + Busan as three full stops (the 7-day plan needs the extra nights).
  • Theme parks plus multi-city rail on the same short trip.
  • Back-to-back day trips every day from Seoul with no buffer.

If you gain two more days, switch to the 7-day itinerary. If you gain five, the 10-day itinerary is where Jeju becomes realistic.

Transport and booking notes (keep them light)

Use a T-money card in cities. For intercity legs, follow the current booking guide rather than older dual-app posts.

Do not invent fixed fares here. Compare options in official channels for your exact date.

Airport day one: start with Incheon to Seoul.

Common mistakes

  • Booking four hotels because a list named four cities.
  • Treating 5 days like 7 and keeping Gyeongju plus Busan plus a long Seoul list.
  • Spending day 1 only on jet lag recovery without a simple neighborhood walk planned.
  • Ignoring departure city: ending in Busan only works if your flight leaves from Busan or you budget a return train.
