Treat Huinnyeoul as a neighborhood walk along a cliff, not a gated sight. The lanes above the water are the dependable part, and the seaside walkway and tunnel in many photos are partly closed for slope works.
Plan on roughly one to two hours (my estimate), reached by city bus. There is no subway station at the village.
Quick answer
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Is entry free? | Yes, per Visit Busan and VisitKorea. There is no gate |
| What hours apply? | No village hours are listed. Visit Busan says daily and VisitKorea's English page says open 24 hours. The district asks visitors to avoid late hours because residents live there |
| Is the coastal walkway open? | Partly. In July 2026 the district said 524 m of the 860 m path was open. I found no notice that the whole walkway is open |
| Is the tunnel open? | Unconfirmed. It was closed from December 26, 2024 and reported unreachable in January 2026. I found no later notice that says it is open |
| How do I get there? | City bus. Visit Busan lists Nampo Station Exit 6, then bus 7, 71 or 508. Yeongdo-gu lists 508, 85 or 82 from Busan Station. Confirm in a live map |
| How long? | About one to two hours (my estimate). No official figure exists |
| Is it step-free? | I found no step-free route. The village sits on a steep slope |
Access to the walkway and tunnel is changing, so use this as a plan and confirm on the day. I checked each source listed below on October 21, 2026.
Is Huinnyeoul worth the trip?
Go if you like walking narrow lanes beside the sea, spotting a film location and looking out at ships waiting at anchor. Visit Busan describes that anchorage view as something you can see only in Yeongdo.
Skip it, or keep it short, if you came for the tunnel photo or a full seaside walk, because access to those is the least certain part. It also suits people poorly if steep stairs are a problem, and it is not a place for a late-night wander.
| Huinnyeoul Culture Village | Gamcheon Culture Village | |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Lanes on a cliff edge above the sea in Yeongdo | Terraced hillside houses in Saha-gu |
| Entry | Free, no gate | Free, with 2026 residential-area visitor hours of 09:00 to 18:00 |
| Access rules | No gate hours listed. The district asks visitors to avoid late hours | Special Management Area rules, with a taxi limit on part of the main lane |
| Main uncertainty | The seaside walkway and tunnel, closed in part for slope works | Bus and vehicle rules during a guidance period |
| Better fit | A short sea-edge walk and a film location | Looking across a slope of painted houses |
The two sit on opposite sides of Busan's old port, so pick one for a half day. The Gamcheon guide covers its rules in full.
What is what: village, lanes, walkway and tunnel
Searches and map apps mix several names, and the access news applies to only some of them.
| Name | What it is | Status note |
|---|---|---|
| Huinnyeoul Culture Village (흰여울문화마을) | The lane neighborhood in Yeongseon-dong 4-ga, where people live. Visit Busan says the lane network joins 14 alleys | The part you can reliably walk |
| Info center (안내센터, 영화기록관) | At 194 Jeoryeong-ro. Hands out the village map and has a photo zone, per Yeongdo-gu | 10:00 to 18:00 |
| Jeoryeong Coastal Walkway (절영해안산책로) | The seaside path below the village, 860 m in the district's figures | Partly closed for slope works |
| Huinnyeoul Coastal Tunnel (흰여울해안터널) | A tunnel of about 70 m cut into the sea wall, opened in December 2018 | Closed in 2024 and 2025. Current access unconfirmed |
| Wider Yeongdo | The island district around it | Not covered here |
I treat the cafes, shops and homes in the lanes as part of the neighborhood and name no business.
Coastal walkway and tunnel: what is known
Everything here comes from the district or a news report, and the dates matter.
| Date | What the source says |
|---|---|
| December 2018 | Yeongdo-gu says the tunnel opened for older or less mobile walkers who could not manage the steep stair section between the Piano Staircase and Wave Plaza |
| December 26, 2024 to August 31, 2025 | A district notice closed the tunnel (both entrances) for the walkway works, with the end date extended. It cites rockfall protection and interference from neighboring works |
| January 13, 2026 | The Busan Ilbo reported that the roughly 900 m from the Busan Health High School entrance to the tunnel could not be entered. The district planned a temporary opening of the end section from January 15, with re-closure planned for May |
| July 24, 2026 | The district said 524 m of the 860 m path was open. It planned about 684 m (around 80%) to open after the 2-1 district finishes in May 2027, and targeted the end of 2028 for the rest |

The district's July statement does not name the tunnel. The January report places it at the far end of the path, in a section still under works, so my reading is that it sits in the part that is not yet open. That is my inference, not an official statement.
I found no notice after July 2026 that says the tunnel is open for normal use. Before you plan around it, call the 1330 tourist hotline that Visit Busan lists, or ask at the info center.
If the path is closed on the day, the lanes above the water remain. The January report describes a bypass route along the top of the path, so you can still reach the shoreline views indirectly.
Hours, admission and costs
Visit Busan lists the village as open daily with free admission, and VisitKorea's English page says open 24 hours. Those are listing entries, not a statement that every lane is meant for night visits.
- Admission: free, per Visit Busan and VisitKorea.
- Late visits: Yeongdo-gu asks visitors to avoid late hours because residents live in the village.
- Info center: 10:00 to 18:00, closed January 1, Seollal and Chuseok day.
- Tunnel lighting: the district lists the interior lights as on at 09:00 and off at 23:00. That is a lighting schedule, not proof of access.
- Village phone: Visit Busan lists 051-419-4067.
Getting there
Neither the district nor Visit Busan lists a subway station at the village, so every route ends on a city bus.
| Starting point | What the official sources list |
|---|---|
| Nampo Station (Line 1) | Exit 6, then bus 7, 71 or 508 to the Yeongseon-dong Baengnyeonsa stop (Visit Busan) |
| Yeongdo Bridge | Buses 82, 85, 7, 71, 508, 6 or 9 to the Huinnyeoul Culture Village stop (Yeongdo-gu) |
| Busan Station | Buses 508, 85 or 82 to the Huinnyeoul Culture Village stop (Yeongdo-gu) |
| Jagalchi Market | No official listing. Yeongdo Bridge is the boarding point Yeongdo-gu names, and it is close to the market, so check a live map for the stop |
Busan is reorganizing its city bus network in stages, and the city's 2025 release says later stages follow. I could not confirm that the numbers above survived every stage, so treat them as the listings of Visit Busan and Yeongdo-gu and check a live map.
A T-money card works on the metro and city buses. The T-money guide explains what to buy. I give no fare and no frequency, because I found no official figure.
Ask a station attendant or a driver, or show the Korean name on your phone.

Where do I catch the bus to Huinnyeoul Culture Village?
Korean audio isn't available on this device or browser. Use the romanization above to say it.
By taxi or car
I found no official taxi fare, drop-off point or travel time, so I am not giving one. Show the Korean name 흰여울문화마을 on a map app or to the driver, and check where the car can stop.
Yeongdo-gu lists public lots near the walkway: in front of the walkway (100 spaces), the Sinseon Skyway lot (49) and the Namhang breakwater lot (123). Fees conflict between sources. Visit Busan marks the lot at the walkway entrance as paid, and VisitKorea's English page says parking is free, so check current official information.
What you will see
The village is a set of lanes and viewpoints, not one attraction with a fixed route. These are the points the official sources name.
- The lanes and the sea. Visit Busan describes a narrow lane along the cliff edge with small houses packed together, and sea views at almost every turn.
- The anchorage. Visit Busan says the ships you see are vessels waiting at anchor before entering Busan port.
- Film locations. Yeongdo-gu names The Attorney (변호인) and Confession of Murder (범죄와의 전쟁) among the productions shot here. Visit Busan says a wall in the village carries a line from The Attorney.
- The old road. Visit Busan says the Huinnyeoul lane was the only road to Taejongdae before today's Jeoryeong-ro was built.
- The info center. Yeongdo-gu says it hands out a village map, has staff on site and shows films connected to Huinnyeoul.

I do not list cafes or shops. Businesses here change, and I could not verify any of them against an official source.
History and the name
Yeongdo-gu says the village was reborn in December 2011, when vacant houses were remodeled to support local artists and give residents everyday access to culture. Visit Busan describes it as the place where refugees' lives began and where a village community of residents now lives.
I found no official source explaining the name, so I am not giving a meaning for 흰여울. Do not trust a single blog's etymology without a source.
Respecting residents and photography
The most direct rule is the district's: it asks visitors to avoid late hours because people live here.
Beyond that, this is general courtesy rather than an official rule:
- Stay on the lanes, and do not walk into yards, doorways or stairwells that look private.
- Do not point a camera or phone into windows, and do not photograph residents without asking.
- Keep your voice low, especially in the evening, and carry your trash out.
- Do not block a lane to take a photo.
I found no official statement on where photography is limited, so follow any signs and staff on the day.
Walking difficulty and accessibility
Expect slopes and stairs. The photos from the official tourism office show stairways down to the shoreline, and the district built the tunnel in 2018 because the stair section nearby was hard for older or less mobile walkers.
Visit Busan lists accessible parking for the village. I found no step-free route, no elevator and no wheelchair information, so ask the info center or 1330 if that matters for your group. The seaside walkway has no confirmed open route to the tunnel right now.
Planning your visit
Weather and light matter more than any schedule here. A clear day gives the sea and anchorage views, wind and rain make the stairs and the exposed edge less pleasant, and I give no sunset time, because the date changes it. For the evening, I found no official source on lighting or crowds, and the district asks for no late visits, so plan to finish in daylight.
Pairing with Jagalchi and Nampo
The usual half day pairs this village with Jagalchi Market and Nampo, using the Yeongdo Bridge bus link. Read the Jagalchi guide for the market side, the Busan guide for the wider picture and the Nampo and Jagalchi stay guide if you are choosing a base.
Yeongdo also has the Samjin Eomuk Main Store, a fish cake shop with a making class. The Samjin Eomuk guide covers its hours, directions and cautions.
Keep the day light. Pick this or Gamcheon plus one other stop, and see the 2 day Busan itinerary for how the pieces can fit.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a station at the village. There is none, so you change to a city bus.
- Planning the tunnel photo. Its status is unconfirmed, and the January 2026 report called the end of the path unreachable.
- Reading "open 24 hours" as an invitation to arrive late. The district asks visitors to avoid late hours.
- Using an old bus number. Busan changes routes in stages, so confirm in a live map.
- Assuming a full seaside walk. In July 2026 the district said 524 m of 860 m was open.
- Planning on a taxi fare you read online. I found no official figure.
- Photographing into windows or at residents. People live here.
- Skipping the stairs question. The slope has stairs and I found no step-free route.
- Treating one parking claim as fact. Sources conflict on whether the lot is paid.
- Stacking Huinnyeoul on a long Busan day. Pair it with one nearby stop.

The bottom line
Go in daylight, take a city bus, and treat the lanes as a neighborhood. Do not plan the day around the tunnel until the district says it is open.

Gamcheon Culture Village Busan Guide: How to Get There, What to See & Tips for Foreign Visitors
Gamcheon Culture Village is a hillside neighborhood of painted houses in Busan's Saha-gu that began as a Korean War refugee settlement and is still home to residents. Entry is free. Since Saha-gu designated it a Special Management Area on August 1, 2026, visitor access to the residential areas is listed as 09:00 to 18:00, tourist vehicles including taxis are restricted on a stretch of the main lane, and groups of 10 or more must buy the official map. Most visitors ride Metro Line 1 to Toseong or Jagalchi Station and switch to a village bus.
