Seoraksan is Korea's early mountain-foliage trip, not a Seoul day-hike and not a full Sokcho city encyclopedia.
The useful unit is one night in Sokcho: bus from Seoul, one mountain mode at Outer Seorak (Sogongwon), then market food and the coast.
There is no current tourist KTX to Sokcho. Planned east-west rail is not a 2026 visitor option.
Use the express or intercity bus.

2026 foliage (forecast, not a promise)
Visit Korea's 2026 Fall Foliage Forecast (8 September 2026) currently places first foliage at Seoraksan around 3 October, with nationwide peak from mid-October through early November.
Planning maps often put Seoraksan's peak window around late October. Treat around 25 October as a forecast center, not a reserved color day.

Pick one mountain mode. Do not stack Ulsanbawi and the cable car and a long valley as a default 1N2D.

Daecheongbong is a long, serious climb with entry cutoffs. It is not the default for this trip.

Seoul to Sokcho
Book KOBUS for Gangnam Seoul Express Bus Terminal → Sokcho Express Bus Terminal, or an intercity app for Dong Seoul → Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal.
Typical road time is about 2 to 3 hours, traffic depending. Do not copy a full timetable here. Confirm your date on the booking site.

The two Sokcho terminals are separate places. Do not assume "Sokcho terminal" is one building.
Night buses exist on some tables. Still plan daylight for the mountain.
Sokcho to Seoraksan (Sogongwon)
Outer Seorak's usual first-timer gate is Sogongwon in Seorak-dong.
The cable-car operator currently names city buses 7 and 7-1 from the intercity terminal toward the park, via the express terminal and Seoraksan entrance, ending at the park parking area. Confirm the live number on the bus or at the stop. Old blog numbers are not a timetable.
A taxi from either terminal is the simple option with luggage or a tight cable-car window.
KNPS trails and park notices live on the Seoraksan National Park site. Check closures, fire-prevention limits, and weather before you leave the hotel.
Seoraksan Cable Car and Gwongeumseong
The Seorak Cable Car runs from Sogongwon to an upper station at Gwongeumseong (about 699 m, 1,128 m of cable, about 5 minutes one way).
Official operator rules that matter:
- Same-day on-site tickets only. No advance reservation.
- Round trip only. There is no hiking path down. You must ride back.
- Hours are posted daily, often the day before, and can change with wind and weather.
- Strong wind or severe weather can stop the cars. Unused tickets are refunded in that case, per the operator.
- Current adult round-trip fare on the official table is ₩16,000 (child ₩12,000). Confirm at the counter. Senior discounts do not apply in the 2026 autumn blackout 19 September to 15 November.
The car does not drop you on a flat summit plaza. After the upper station you walk on rocky fortress ground toward viewpoints, a beacon site, and hermitage scenery. Wear shoes you can scramble in. Strollers are not allowed on the car; wheelchairs can board (elevator to the second-floor platform).
Autumn weekends get busy. Arrive with a backup. Do not invent a fixed "2-hour queue."

Do not build a non-refundable day that only works if the cable car runs.
Level B: Biseondae valley walk
Biseondae is the usual lower-commitment turnaround from Sogongwon: a valley path toward rock and water, not a ridge.
Plan about 3 km each way and a 2 to 3 hour round trip with photos, as a planning range. Beyond Biseondae the Cheonbuldong / Daecheongbong line gets steep. Turn around unless you meant to hike that.
Autumn adds wet leaves, crowds, and earlier dark. This is still a mountain path.
Level C: Ulsanbawi (real hike)
Ulsanbawi is the named Outer Seorak hike for this article. Visit Korea lists about 7.6 km round trip and about 4 hours.
The line is Sogongwon → Sinheungsa → Heundeulbawi → iron stairs to the rock. The last stretch is steep. Do not sell it as a moderate boardwalk.
Start early. Leave a daylight buffer for the return bus. Check KNPS for the day's control. Skip it in ice, high wind, or if you would rather keep knees for Sokcho.
Park fees and Sinheungsa
National-park trail admission is generally free. Parking, the cable car, and any temple cultural-property fee at Sinheungsa are separate. The cable-car boarding flow still passes a cultural-property gate. Confirm what you are paying at the counter, not from an old KTO fee table.
Sinheungsa is the Sogongwon temple stop for Level A. It is not a full temple guide.
Sokcho after the mountain
Treat Sokcho as four clusters, not a random list.

Market food
Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market (속초관광수산시장) is the post-hike food stop: many stalls, not one restaurant.
Dakgangjeong is glazed fried chicken, usually sweet-spicy, sold as takeaway boxes. Compare a couple of stalls. There is no official "number one."
Ojingeo sundae (squid sundae) and Abai sundae are Sokcho identities. Squid sundae stuffs squid; Abai-style sundae is the village's blood-sausage lineage from Korean War displaced communities. Both are typically pork and seafood mixes. They are not vegetarian, and they are not a certified halal product. If you have pork, shellfish, or gluten limits, ask before you order.
Skip a 10-shop ranking. Hours and menus change.
Abai Village and Gaetbae
Abai Village (아바이마을) in Cheongho-dong grew as a settlement of people displaced during the Korean War. Walk it as living neighborhood history, not a cute film set.
Gaetbae is the hand-pulled cable ferry across the channel between central Sokcho and the village. Listings commonly show about ₩500 adult one way, roughly 05:00 to 23:00 in May to October, shorter in winter, and weather-dependent. Confirm on the day. Passengers help pull the cable.
Pair market → Gaetbae → Abai in late afternoon if legs still work.
Sokcho Beach in autumn
Sokcho Beach is an evening or morning walk, not a swimming chapter. Summer beach desks and rental stands are not the October product. Use it for air, sunrise, and a flat stroll after granite stairs.
Yeongnangho or Cheongchoho are optional extras only if you have a second morning. Do not add them to a packed Day 1.

It is a weak default in foliage season: road time, local transfer, and weekend crowds stack. One night is the planning default.

Layers, real walking shoes, water, rain shell, phone battery, and a warmer layer for Gwongeumseong even if Sokcho beach feels mild. Mountain weather is not beach weather.
