Andong is a culture-first KTX trip from Seoul, built around Hahoe Folk Village, Confucian heritage, and local food.

KTX-Eum usually takes about 2 to 2.5 hours from the Seoul area, often closer to about 2 hours from Cheongnyangni.

That rail hop is convenient, but the friction starts after arrival: Andong Station is not next to Hahoe, and Hahoe is not a short walk from the old market.

Hours, buses, and performances change. Check Korail+ and Andong City / Hahoe official pages for your date.

Is Andong worth visiting?

Yes, if you want traditional culture, UNESCO heritage, and a slower regional city rather than shopping or nightlife.

Good for

  • UNESCO / hanok / Confucian history travelers
  • Photographers and slow walkers
  • Food travelers who want jjimdak and traditional soju context
  • Repeat Korea visitors after Seoul and Busan
  • 1-night / 2-day trips

Less ideal for

  • First-timers with only a few Korea days (spend those on Seoul + one classic city)
  • Nightlife or mall-focused trips
  • Travelers unwilling to use buses or taxis beyond the station
  • Anyone expecting Hahoe to be walkable from the KTX platform

How to get to Andong from Seoul by KTX-Eum

Practical boarding

Seoul-area stationRole
CheongnyangniDefault Jungang Line hub for most Andong KTX-Eum trips
Seoul StationUseful if you are already near Seoul Station; some trains start/end here
SangbongLimited / selective stop; check Korail+ before relying on it

If your hotel is in central or eastern Seoul, Cheongnyangni is often the practical departure. Do not assume every Andong train leaves only from Cheongnyangni.

Book with Korail+ or the Korail website. Full booking steps stay on the KTX booking guide.

Travel-time range

Use a range: Seoul-area ↔ Andong KTX-Eum commonly takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, often nearer about 2 hours from Cheongnyangni. Do not treat any single minute figure as universal.

Andong Station reality check

Andong Station sits in the Songhyeon area next to the bus terminal, outside the old downtown. Arriving by KTX means you have reached Andong city, not Hahoe Village.

Andong Station → Hahoe: the important final leg

This is the trip's main friction point.

OptionWho it fitsNotes
City / local busNo-car travelers with timeServices run from the terminal / downtown toward Hahoe; intervals are not metro-frequency. Confirm today's number and times on Andong bus info or the station tourist desk.
TaxiSmall groups, tight schedulesRoughly on the order of 30 to 50 minutes each way depending on traffic; agree the destination as Hahoe Folk Village.
Tourist taxi / day hireVisitors combining Hahoe + Byeongsan or Hahoe + DosanUseful when buses do not line up; confirm current booking and pricing officially.
Rental carMulti-site heritage daysBest freedom for Hahoe, Byeongsan, and Dosan in one loop

Do not invent a permanent bus number. Guides and city pages have shown labels such as 210, 급행2, or older 246-style services at different times. Check the live timetable before you leave Seoul.

Inside Hahoe's visitor approach, a free shuttle usually links the ticket / market area to the village entrance. Private cars generally do not drive into the lived-in core.

Hahoe Folk Village

Hahoe is Andong's primary first-time attraction: a living clan village in a bend of the Nakdong River, inscribed with Yangdong as UNESCO's Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong.

What to expect

  • Tiled yangban houses and thatched commoner houses still in use
  • River scenery and walking loops
  • Optional Buyongdae cliff viewpoint across the river for the classic aerial-style view
  • Mask culture linked to Hahoe Byeolsingut Tallori (mask dance)

Treat homes as private. Stay on visitor paths and keep voices down.

Hours and admission (confirm official)

Andong City's Hahoe helper currently frames seasonal opening around:

  • Summer (about Apr to Sep): roughly 09:00 to 18:00 / 19:00 depending on the posted table
  • Winter (about Oct to Mar): roughly 09:00 to 17:00 / 18:00

Adult admission is commonly listed around ₩5,000 for non-residents, with youth/child discounts. Last entry is earlier than closing. Confirm on the Hahoe official helper before you go.

Mask dance

Regular mask-dance performances are often scheduled in the afternoon at the village performance hall (commonly around 14:00 on many open days, with Monday / winter variations). Treat any fixed weekday list as provisional and verify the performance calendar for your date.

Buyongdae and Byeongsan

Buyongdae is worth adding if you want the overlook photo and have energy for the climb or ferry approach. Byeongsan Seowon is nearby Confucian academy heritage; it pairs with Hahoe better than with Dosan on a no-car day, but only if buses or a taxi/tour align.

City evening: market, jjimdak, Woryeonggyo

Andong jjimdak

Andong's signature braised chicken dish grew around the Gu Market jjimdak alley, where many specialized shops cluster. Expect soy-braised chicken with vegetables and glass noodles, shared by a group.

You do not need a ranked "best" shop. Pick a busy alley restaurant, confirm spice level, and share one bird for two to four people. Hours and menus change; avoid treating any blog price as fixed.

Andong soju

Andong soju is a traditional distilled spirit, not the same product as mass-market green-bottle soju. It is often stronger and sold as a regional specialty. Some travelers visit a soju museum / brewery experience for tasting and context. Alcohol rules, tasting hours, and age checks apply; confirm the venue before planning around it.

Woryeonggyo

Woryeonggyo is Andong's long wooden bridge and a reliable evening walk after market food. Night lighting is part of the appeal; confirm seasonal lighting hours if that is your main reason to go.

Dosan Seowon: second-cluster decision

Dosan Seowon is a major Neo-Confucian academy in northern Andong and part of the UNESCO Seowon, Korean Neo-Confucian Academies listing. It is not the same place as Hahoe, and it is not next to Andong Station.

PlanVerdict
Hahoe + Dosan same day, no carUsually too much once bus waits are included
Hahoe Day 1, Dosan Day 2Cleaner
Car / tourist taxi dayFeasible if you accept a long road day

If you only have one heritage half-day, choose Hahoe first.

Car vs no-car

ModeBest use
No carKTX-Eum + bus/taxi to Hahoe + city evening (jjimdak + Woryeonggyo)
Car or hired taxiHahoe + Byeongsan, or Hahoe one day and Dosan another with less waiting

Car-free Andong is possible, not effortless. The hard part is Hahoe timing, not the KTX ride.

How many days?

LengthVerdict
Day tripDoable for Hahoe only with an early outbound and late return
1 night / 2 daysBest default: Hahoe + city evening, optional Dosan or slower morning
2 nightsOnly if adding festivals, Bongjeongsa, or a Gyeongju combo

Sample plans

Tight Hahoe day trip

  1. Early KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni (or Seoul Station)
  2. Bus or taxi to Hahoe
  3. Village walk (+ Buyongdae if time)
  4. Return to station for evening KTX

Skip Dosan on this shape.

Strong 1 night / 2 days

Day 1: Arrive → Hahoe → return to city → jjimdak alley → Woryeonggyo
Day 2: Dosan Seowon or a slower city morning, then KTX back

Where to stay

BaseBest for
Near Gu Market / old downtownJjimdak and Woryeonggyo evenings
Near Andong Station / terminalEarly trains and simple logistics
Hahoe / hanok stayImmersion; harder late dining variety

Book earlier for autumn weekends and Mask Dance Festival dates.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking KTX arrival means you are at Hahoe
  • Leaving Hahoe bus timing to chance
  • Forcing Hahoe + Dosan on one no-car day
  • Skipping last-entry rules at Hahoe
  • Treating Byeongsan and Dosan as interchangeable
  • Using a fixed old bus number from an outdated blog
  • Planning a shopping-and-nightlife Andong night

FAQ

Can I day-trip Andong from Seoul? Yes for a Hahoe-focused day if you start early and pre-check return trains and buses. Overnight is more comfortable.

Cheongnyangni or Seoul Station? Cheongnyangni is often the practical default if you are staying in central or eastern Seoul. Search both on Korail+ if your hotel is near Seoul Station.

Is Hahoe near Andong Station? No. Plan a separate bus or taxi leg of roughly 30 to 50+ minutes each way.

Do I need a car? Not for Hahoe + city evening. A car helps if you insist on Hahoe and Dosan in one day.

What should I eat? Andong jjimdak in the Gu Market alley is the easiest local food stop. Andong soju is a traditional spirit; taste responsibly.

Is the mask dance on every day? No. Confirm the performance calendar for your date.

Final takeaway

Ride KTX-Eum to Andong Station, then treat Hahoe as a second trip by bus or taxi. Keep Dosan for a second day unless you have private transport, and use the city evening for jjimdak and Woryeonggyo.
